Why should I sign up with the Pickering Skating Club?
We are a not for profit club. We are the only club in Pickering sanctioned by Skate Canada (athletes who go on to the Olympics follow the Skate Canada program). Our coaches are certified by Skate Canada and the National Coaching Certificate Program -You can receive 20% savings on Membership at the Pickering Recreation Complex
We offer Learn to Skate programs for all ages up to competitive programs. Your payment qualifies for the Childrens’ Fitness Tax Credit -We offer multi-session, multiple family member discounts as well as pro-rated fees so you can start anytime. Learn skating skills which can be applied to hockey, ringette and figure skating
What area’s do you serve?
We are located in the heart of the City of Pickering and have members who reside throughout the Durham region, including Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, etc..
What payment do you accept?
We accept cash, cheque or VISA. -If you are signing up for a full year (fall and winter sessions), we offer a 4 equal payments plan Payments, with registration forms, can be dropped off at the Pickering Skating club office any time at our office through the secure office door slot.
How do I know if I’m registered for the session I chose if I just dropped off my registration?
If you dropped off your registration form, assume you are registered for the day/time you chose. If there is a problem, we will contact you. Feel free to call or email us to confirm your registration form has been received.
What levels do you offer?
Pickering Skating Club offers a Preschool program for ages 3 to 5, Canskate for ages 5 to Adult, Hockey Skating Skills and STARskate for those who have passed the Canskate. For more information, or to register, visit the following pages:

How long do sessions run?
Skaters have the choice of registering for a full season or just fall or winter sessions. Full sessions runs from the September to April. Fall session begin in September and end in December. Winter session run from January to April.
What does SCPSC stand for ?
SCPSC is a short form for our legal name, Skate Canada Pickering Skating Club.
Where are you located?
Pickering Skating Club is located in the City of Pickering in the Pickering Recreation Centre at 1867 Valley Farm Road (and Diefenbaker). Drive around back to the Delaney Ice Arena. There is plenty of parking available.

We will make every attempt to return your call as soon as possible however, please keep in mind, the office is only open in the evenings during the fall, winter and spring until April. (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 6:00 pm -7:00 pm, Saturday 11:00 am -12:00 am, Sunday 11:00 am-12:00 pm or 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm.)

What are Test days on the calendar?
Test days are for the Starskaters only. Their coaches will let them know if they are ready to be tested in one of the areas they have been working on, ie. skills, dance, solo.
There is a testing fee (please speak to your coach)
During Test Days, classes continue as scheduled or all other programs (Preschool, CanSkate and STARSkate).
What happens when someone passes Level 6 in Canskate?
Students become a StarSkate. For skaters moving up, you will need to hire a Private Coach Our STARSkate program helps skaters of all ages develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and interpretive skating.
Alternatively, those students interested in developing Hockey skills can register for Pickering Skating Club’s Hockey Skating Skills.
What are Parents responsibilities if their child is a Starskater?
As a Not-for-profit club, the Pickering Skating Club relies heavily on volunteers. As a member, we require each family to volunteer for 2 BINGO sessions at Delta Bingo located at 975 Dillingham Rd, Pickering, ON L1W 1Z7 (on Sunday afternoons). Bingo subsidizes our programs and keeps costs down for all of our members. Sign up in the Club’s office.
Additionally, we require families to commit to 4 hours of volunteer work throughout the year. This can include additional Bingo sessions, assisting with our mini Olympics, gala showcase or test days, be our professional photographer, deliver fall/winter advertisements to schools and day-cares or volunteer to be a Board member.
What are Program Assistants?
Program Assistants are STARSkaters, 12 years of age and over, who volunteer their time to help deliver the Preschool and CanSkate programs under the direction of the CanSkate Coordinator and Coaches.
Program Assistants demonstrate and teach skills under direction of the certified coaches, supervise practice sessions, lead warm up and cool down exercises, reinforce learned skills, lead exercises, drills and games under coaches direction, hand out awards under coaches direction and are role models for the younger skaters.
Program Assistants receive training prior to the season starting. The initial 20 hours of their volunteer time is considered hours in support of the club. This is a one-time requirement and additional hours can be used as volunteer credits towards their High School requirements or used for expenses incurred within the club (ice time, club clothing, test fees)
What is Program Assistant of the Month?
A Program Assistant is selected monthly as recipient of this award for ongoing commitment, consistent punctuality and commendable role model.
How do I find out about competitions?
The Pickering Skating club publishes an annual calendar of events the club plans on attending. Additionally, information is posted on the bulletin board outside the office and rink. Coaches will also be communicating with you and your skater.
I see clothing, skates and other things in the office. Are those for sale?
Yes. The Pickering Skating Club has a mix of new and gently used clothing and equipment for sale. We understand that our skaters grow quickly, if you have any gently used items that your skater has grown out of, feel free to bring them to the SCPSC office and we can help display them on your behalf.
What is Ticket Ice?
STARSkaters can arrange for additional ice time by purchasing Tickets in the Pickering Skating club office. Please speak to a volunteer regarding price and limitations.
Non-members must be registered with Skate Canada and can purchase additional ice time at a rate of $25 per ticket.
How do I become a volunteer member of the Board of Directors?
Each year we hold an Annual General Meeting where members are elected. (see the SCPSC Constitution and By-Laws for Nomination procedures)
Each volunteer Board Member serves 2 years. The Board of Directors meet monthly.
The President, 2nd Vice president, Treasurer, Test chair, Membership, Publicity and Senior Representative are elected at the Annual General Meeting in even calendar years
The 1st Vice President, Secretary, Competition, Skater Development and Social Chairs are all elected at the Annual General Meeting in odd calendar years.
Where do I get a Pickering Skating Club jacket I see some of the skater’s wearing?
Club jackets are typically ordered in September. Please speak with someone in the SCPSC office to confirm the due date and costs.
