Faith Named CityTV Athlete of the Week

Faith Pickering Skating Club

Soaring to a series of competitive wins, Faith Lewis, a Pickering Skating Club skater, was named “Athlete of the Week” by CityTV.  The episode will be broadcasted during the evening news on January 25, 2016, at 6:00 pm.

Faith began skating at the age of four when her mom signed her up for CanSkate in Barrie, Ontario in 2006. CanSkate is Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program for beginners.  Faith was hooked!  After completing the CanSkate program, she graduated to STARSkate and transferred to the Pickering Skating Club in 2009, where she now practices with her coach five days a week.

“Faith has a very athletic style of skating and achieves terrific height in her jumps.  She works very hard year round and also finds the time to give back to the young skaters at our club by assisting on our CanSkate session five times a week!” says Faith’s Coach Linda Donnelly.

Beyond the medals, this athlete is dedicated to paying it forward and volunteering to support the sport she loves. While STARSkaters are required to help out weekly as a Program Assistant with one of the CanSkate sessions, Faith can be seen on the ice working with new skaters every chance she gets.

The highlight of Faith’s personal achievements, so far, is the landing of her Axel. Named after Norwegian figure skater Axel Paulsen, the Axel is an extremely challenging jump that requires the skater to complete an extra half rotation (180 degrees), and land with the skater gliding backwards.

Inspired by her favourite skater, Patrick Chan, Faith enjoys competitions and competing with people from different clubs. Her future goals include representing Canada in the Olympics and skating for Disney on Ice. We look forward to seeing more from this incredible athlete in the coming years.
